Temple basketball signs player from Argentina
Saturday, 12 July 2008

ImagePhiladelphia Daily News: The last time Temple recruited a point guard from Argentina it worked out pretty well.

As a senior in 1999-2000, Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Pepe Sanchez was a third-team All-American for a squad that went into the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed.

Now another Owls' coach has taken a similar route.

Owlscoop.com reported that Fran Dunphy has signed 6-4 Juan Manuel Fernandez to a national letter of intent.

The son of a former professional player in Argentina, Fernandez will be playing for that country's team in next week's 2008 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship in Formosa, Argentina.

Because high school students in Argentina typically graduate later in the year, it is unclear when Fernandez will arrive on North Broad Street, but there is a chance he could be available to start the season.

Armwood commits to Villanova
Wednesday, 02 July 2008

ImagePhiladelphia Inquirer: Villanova got an early start on its freshman basketball class of 2009 yesterday, receiving an oral commitment from Isaiah Armwood, a 6-foot-8 forward from Montrose Christian School in Rockville, Md., according to his high school coach.

Armwood averaged about 13.5 points and more than 10 rebounds during his junior season, when Montrose Christian finished 22-4 and in the national top 25.

"Isaiah is very athletic and can play inside and outside," Montrose Christian coach Stu Vetter said. "He was a freshman on our team when Kevin Durant [the 2008 NBA rookie of the year] was a senior."

Armwood chose Villanova over two other finalists, Texas and Syracuse. Guard Terrell Vinson, a Montrose Christian teammate, also is reported to be considering Villanova.

According to the Washington Post, Armwood backed out of tryouts for the USA Basketball under-18 team to concentrate on summer school.

Crosgile to St. Joseph's
Thursday, 19 June 2008

ImageZAGSBLOG: Justin Crosgile, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound combo guard from Wayne (NJ) DePaul Catholic, has made his choice.

He has committed to St. Joseph's.

"I like St.Joe's," Crosgile, a native of Paterson, said Wednesday night. "It's not too far from home. It's a small school. They have been pursuing me. They showed me a lot of interest. My brother (Marcus) is going there."

Crosgile also held offers from St. John's, Seton Hall, Rutgers and Houston and had interest from Western Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio State, Davidson,Virginia, Miami and Notre Dame.

"I'll bring a lot of energy and defense," he said. "I think I could play a big part at the guard-oriented school. I think I'll fit perfectly into that school."

The Philadelphia Big Five has a rich basketball tradition that is unmatched anywhere in the country. All five city schools battle it out for bragging rights. With the spring signing period now over, the next group of incoming freshmen prepare to take their place in Philly’s great basketball history. Here is a look at five key players that we really like who are headed to the City of Brotherly Love next year. They’ll play at various levels, from the Ivy League to the Big East, but should fit well at those programs.

Zack Rosen (5-11 165 PG) Committed to Penn
Zack is definitely the steal of the Big Five. The Quakers grabbed a talented guard who could probably play at any of the Big Five programs. The lead guard has a good all around game. The lefty can attack off the dribble, shoot it from the perimeter and setup his teammates. He’ll also really get after it on the defensive end. Recently, he capped off his high school career with a strong showing at New York’s iS8 tournament. In a semifinal loss, he went toe to toe with Florida bound Erving Walker. Zack should have an outstanding basketball career for the Quakers. He’s not too bad in the classroom either as he was accepted to the prestigious Wharton School of Business.

Prospect from Nigeria headed to Saint Joseph's
Wednesday, 28 May 2008

ImagePhiladelphia Daily News: Last fall, schools such as Louisville and UCLA were looking at 6-10 Temidayo Adebayo, according to Stu Vetter, his coach at Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.). Then, a medical condition slowed down the young player from Nigeria enough that he missed the start of the season and was never really at full strength during the season. That medical condition has since cleared up, according to Vetter.

The physical setback meant some school was going to have to take a risk on a player who is much more potential than performance at this point. Saint Joseph's is that school and, if academic records from Nigeria can be put in good order, Adebayo will enroll in summer school at St. Joe's next month.

"His upside is he's very athletic, a very good shot-blocker," Vetter said. "The downside is he hasn't played a lot of basketball. Skill-wise, he has the potential to be a fine player and, at some point, maybe a very, very good player."

Adebayo has been in the United States for a little more than a year. Vetter thinks he has only played 3 years of basketball and barely any of "what you would call basketball."
